Administration as Control
In Animal Farm, George Orwell constructs a closed system in which authority stabilises through control of language rather than open force. After the revolt, the farm reorganises into a managed system. The book organises itself through administrative revision, where rules are not enforced once but altered repeatedly, each change resetting what can be recognised as true. This produces a structure in which power holds by controlling what can be said and remembered.
Animal Farm returned to me through absence. A younger colleague had not read it. Remove a text like this from a curriculum and recognition weakens. The loss is not knowledge but the ability to register change as it occurs.
The structure is narrow: a sealed environment, a limited cast, a fixed set of rules. This constraint isolates process. The pigs do not seize control in a single act. They alter the commandments in small increments. Each revision changes the terms under which the animals interpret what they see. Statements that would have contradicted the original rules no longer do so once the wording has shifted.
Authority holds through procedure rather than spectacle. Slogans replace argument. The commandments are rewritten at night. The wall records the current version. What is written displaces what was previously seen. By the time the animals sense inconsistency, the wording that would allow them to name it has already changed.
The book does not depend on historical mapping to function. Its force lies in showing how control consolidates where verification is weak. The animals cannot test claims against a stable record. Literacy is uneven. Those who can read control interpretation. Those who cannot must accept what is read aloud.
Squealer does not persuade through debate. He reads, rephrases and reasserts. Each intervention replaces memory with the updated version. Nothing is argued in the sense of being contested. It is entered, repeated and accepted.
What appears as loyalty is structurally required. Boxer continues to work and to repeat the phrases given to him. His position in the system does not allow him to verify what he is told. His labour sustains the structure that fixes him in place. The distribution of effort and reward remains unequal, but cannot be named as such within the available language.
Placed within the archive, it functions as an entry point, establishing dynamics later intensified under different pressures. Tender Is the Flesh extends institutional control over the body. The Colony places social order under environmental isolation. The Slip traces institutional breakdown from within.
The conditions it models are stable. Once language is controlled, contradiction cannot accumulate. Without a fixed record, resistance cannot hold.
